19K Design & Contracting Ltd. is a locally owned residential renovation company serving Greater Victoria. We specialize in renovations and additionsno commercial work, no new builds. Just quality residential projects done right.

We're growing fast and looking for a 3rd- or 4th-year Apprentice Carpenter who wants to complete their apprenticeship and earn their Red Seal while working on quality residential projects.

What You'll do

Assist with framing, finishing, repairs, and installations
Read and interpret plans, drawings, and scope documents
Work alongside Red Seal Carpenters and learn on the job
Keep job sites clean, safe, and organized
Communicate professionally with clients, teammates, and subtrades
Take on increased responsibility as skills develop
Follow safety procedures and company standards at all times

What You Need

3rd or 4th year Carpentry Apprentice registered with SkilledTradesBC
Active apprenticeship registration number
Reliable transportation to job sites across Greater Victoria
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Strong attention to detail and pride in quality workmanship
Eager to learn and take direction

Position overview

This document formalizes the role, objectives, expected results and performance measures for the Apprentice Carpenter position at 19K Design and Contracting. The role is a supervised trade apprenticeship responsible for performing basic carpentry tasks on construction, renovation and shop projects using dimensional lumber, plywood, wallboard and associated materials.

Accountability is limited to executing assigned work safely, to specification, and on schedule while demonstrating continuous skill development toward journeyman-level competence.

Objectives and Key Results (OKRs)

Objective 1 — Execute assigned carpentry tasks to specification and schedule.\n
- KR1.1: Complete 95% of assigned daily/weekly tasks without rework attributable to basic measurement or cutting errors.
- KR1.2: Meet scheduled completion dates for assigned scope on 90% of tracked tasks.

Objective 2 — Maintain and apply safe work practices.\n
- KR2.1: Zero safety incidents caused by non-compliance with PPE or tool-use protocols.
- KR2.2: Complete required safety and site orientation training within the first 30 days on new projects.

Objective 3 — Demonstrate measurable skill progression.\n
- KR3.1: Achieve documented competency on core tasks (basic framing, drywall hanging/finishing, trim installation, door/window installation) within 6–12 months as evaluated by supervising journeyman.
- KR3.2: Reduce supervision/redo rate by 25% over a six-month period.

- KR4.1: Pass weekly toolbox/worksite inspections with no critical deficiencies.

Internal: Provides reliable, cost-effective execution of routine carpentry work, reducing labor bottlenecks for journeymen and supervisors and enabling project schedules to progress. The apprentice’s development pipeline reduces long-term contractor staffing risk by training future skilled tradespeople.
External: Delivers correctly fitted, code-compliant carpentry elements to clients and occupants (framing, doors, windows, trim, drywall), reducing defects, change requests and warranty obligations and supporting overall project quality and client satisfaction.

Key skills, abilities and knowledge required or to be developed

Measurement and layout: Use of tape measures, squares, levels and basic interpretation of drawings to mark and lay out components accurately.
Hand and power tool competence: Safe operation and basic maintenance of saws, nailers, drills, routers, sanders and drywall tools.
Basic carpentry techniques: Framing, sheathing, basic formwork, trim and finish work, door/window installation, hanging and taping/finishing drywall, simple cabinetry assembly.
Material knowledge: Identification and appropriate selection of dimensional lumber, plywood, wallboard, fasteners and adhesives.
Blueprint literacy: Interpret basic plans, cutting lists and material takeoffs under supervision.
Safety and compliance: Understanding of PPE, hazard recognition, tool safety, basic fall protection and site safety procedures; knowledge of relevant local building codes at a basic level.
Quality control mindset: Attention to tolerances, clean finish work and willingness to correct defects promptly.
Physical abilities: Sufficient strength, stamina and manual dexterity for site tasks, including lifting materials and performing repetitive actions.

Supervision, reporting and career progression

The Apprentice Carpenter reports to the site supervisor or assigned journeyman and receives direct daily supervision. Performance is reviewed against the OKRs and KPIs at regular intervals (weekly task reviews and formal evaluations at 3-, 6- and 12-month marks). Successful completion of competencies and sustained KPI performance will be prerequisites for promotion to higher apprenticeship levels or consideration for journeyman progression within 19K Design and Contracting.
